About Coffee

Arabica vs. Robusta

Arabica Coffee or Coffea Arabica accounts for most of the coffee produced today. Within  Arabica, there are three main varieties; Typica, Bourbon and Caturra.  Coffea Arabica has a wide variety of flavors and is much higher quality than its counterpart Robusta.

Robusta Coffee or Coffea Canephora differs greatly from the Arabica coffees in terms of taste and is most commonly used in commercial brands. Robusta is more resilient than Arabica plants, but produces an inferior tasting coffee.

Blends and Varietals

Coffee blends are a mixture of various coffees from different regions blended together to create new and more complex flavors.

Varietals or Single Origin: Coffee from a single region or “estate” in a particular country and is not mixed with any other coffee varietals.

Bean Types

Bourbon

Bean Types: Bourbon

Bourbon is a type of coffee produced from the Bourbon cultivar of the Coffea Arabica species of coffee plant. It is one of the two most popular Arabica coffees grown worldwide, primarily grown in South America. Cup quality is excellent and similar to Typica.

Example

Caturra

Bean Types: Caturra

Caturra: Is a mutation of the Bourbon variety found near the town of Caturra, Brazil and is grown throughout Central and South America.  It produces a higher yield than Bourbon and it generally matures more quickly. It produces more coffee, and is more disease resistant than other Arabica varieties.

Example: Pacas

Typica

Bean Types: Typica

Typica is the base from which many coffee varietals have been developed.  Typica coffee has a very low production, and it has an excellent cup quality.

Pacamara

Bean Types: Pacamara

Pacamara is a hybrid between the Typica mutation Pacas (a natural mutation of the Bourbon) and Maragogipe (a Typica mutation in Maragopipe region, Brazil). It was bred in El Salvador in order to achieve a Typica like variety which produces larger beans.

Peaberry

Bean Types: What is a Peaberry?

A Peaberry is a single coffee bean within a single coffee cherry (fruit), as opposed to double bean inside a coffee cherry fruit. Only about 7% of any given coffee crop is Peaberry and is valued higher than regular coffee beans due to its scarcity and more concentrated flavors. These beans are sorted out, set aside and sold separately from other beans.
